December 2023: Jeremy the fisherman/lone surfer

Coming from the south of France, from Cannes for a vacation trip to Panama, Jéremy, a fishing and surfing enthusiast, contacted me rather by chance via Facebook to do 2/3 days of boat fishing with our organization. From the very first contact, the feeling was good, so we set the dates for mid-December for 3 days of 100/100 lure fishing.

In mid-December, the weather is very mild and the sun is shining. Jéremy, with whom we've become very friendly, wants me to fish with him on the boat.

On the very first day, 10 minutes from the port, we came across a huge flurry of fish activity, with sardines spurting to the surface with big splashes in the middle of the hunt. Thinking at first that it was jacks, we went to the area and what a sight: a horde of 40/50 lb roosterfish were decimating a school of sardines the size of a soccer pitch. On the first cast, I'm hooked up to a very nice Gallo weighing +/- 25 kg on a Popper UBUNTU 155 color DORADO, while Jérémy hasn't yet mounted the lure on his rod. After 10 minutes, nothing. The rest of the day was difficult, with a few small trevally, a pair of Scierras mackerel, 2 Mullets Snapers and 2 small Coqs.

On the second day we jigged a rock near Quebro, the tide was good at daybreak and we hit 2 nice Corvinas between 15 and 20 lbs slow jigging on the bottom. Later in the morning we scouted a beach sheltered from the waves without much hope, and there the sea literally opened in two on Jéremy's Popper, a big Gallo that had gone on the attack and swallowed his FEED POPPER 150 bought the day before in the hotel store. What followed was an epic battle, with a magnificent roosterfish weighing +/- 25 Kg for Jéremy, who told me that with this catch he had just completed his trip! Photos and video of the release, and general good spirits on the boat! It's the middle of the day, and before the lunch break we decide to prospect a cliff sheltered from the swell behind the island of Punta Naranja.

After a few minutes of uncertainty, a magnificent Cubera, the famous red carp weighing around 25/30 kg, climbed onto the boat for the traditional souvenir photos. The two emblematic Panamanian fish, and what's more, both in good size in just 20 minutes, so I say Monsieur Jéremy! After recovering from his emotions, he tells us that all he needs now is a beautiful blue trevally to complete his grand slam, which he achieves an hour later at the Punta Naranja headland with a fish weighing around ten kilos. A successful grand slam!

Thanks again to Jéremy, who has already booked his dates for 2025.
